Congratulations to Sarah Medlin (THS) and Cody Owens (PECHS) for being selected as Superintendants Choices for Governors School for the summer of 2011.
Seniors, please be working on your college applications and beginning to think about who you want to write your recommendation letters. DO NOT wait until the last minute....plan ahead!
Look at opportunites on the left of this page for more curriculum enhancing/career building opportunities and look below. Please note: many of the opportunities below do NOT have the dates for summer of 2011 yet. Also, prices may change. As soon as we get information on this, we will update the page.
GOVERNORS PAGE PROGRAM  This is a one week commuter/residential program in Raleigh which pays the selected students $150. Room/Board with a host family is provided at a cost of $100 if needed.
Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM)
This is a free, residential, state funded program for selected academically talented North Carolina rising Juniors and Seniors (current 10th and 11th graders ) students who may pursue careers based on science and mathematics. Deadline is Jan 31st.
 
HISPANIC EDUCATIONAL SUMMIT This is a one day educational conference for all students who are interested in learning more about the Hispanic Culture/Issues or Spanish as a new language. Cost is just $15. In February. See Mrs. Burton or Mr. Spielman for more info/sign up.

University of North Carolina Project Uplift Program
This is a residential leadership camp that costs just $10 for selected under-served communities of African American, Hispanic/Latino, and first generation/disadvantaged college students who are Junior or 4th year Seniors. See Mrs. Burton or Mr. Spielman for more information. A maximum of 15 students are able to participate.

NORTH CAROLINA AVIATION CAREER EDUCATION ACADEMY ( ACE) This is a week long residential camp at Elizabeth City State University near the Coast Guard Air Station. The cost is $200.
UNCW Oceans Gulf Stream Marine Science Camp This is a one week commuter camp for $500 from 8 am-4 pm. (There are several other camps on the UNCW site as well.)
UNCW Young Writers Camp This is a week residential camp for $425 for students interested in writing.

UNCW Youth Entrepreneurship Program
This is a five day commuter camp for only $35 for students interested in owning their own business.

U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar
This is a 6 day residential program for selected Juniors in Annapolis, Maryland for students interested in a wide variety of both physical and academic activities for $325.
The Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge
This is a 5 day residential camp for selected students interested in Business/Economics for only $75

North Carolina Youth Legislative Assembly Program
This is a residential weekend program held at the Sheraton Hotel in Raleigh for students to learn about the legislative process in North Carolina and express their opinions on issues facing their local, state, and national governments. Cost is $125 for hotel/registration ( Quad Room ). See Mrs. Burton for details.

Research Experience in Chemistry, Astronomy, and Physics
This is a FREE intensive, hands-on 3-week summer program held on the campuses of NCSSM and UNC Chapel Hill for current 10th and 11th grade students who would enjoy doing research under a mentor. Females, minorities, and students from rural regions of NC are encouraged to apply! Deadline is March 5th !

Girls Empowered by Math and Science ( GEMS ) This is a week long non-residential camp at Winston Salem University with an overnight trip to the NC Coast. Cost is $75 and does not include meals.

Meridith College Math Camp This is a one week residential camp for selected rising 10th grade students for $300

Greg Landry's Anatomy Camp This is a week residential camp at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. See Mrs. Burton for details.
 NC A&T State University-Students HOT on the Sciences ( SHOTS ) Camp
httpThis is a 6 week residential camp for selected students for only $50. Must be Sophomores/Juniors and passed Chemistry, Algebra 2, and Biology with a C or better. Must have an overall 2.8 GPA or higher.

These residential camps are held in Greensboro for selected students for $200 from four days to six weeks. The Martha Summer Guy Institute for Future Business Leaders at Appalachian State University
This is a 3 week residential camp for high school juniors which includes a trip to Washington, DC. Students should be interested in business. Only 24 students from NC are selected – tuition is $800, but scholarships are available.

Campbell University School of Pharmacy SciPharm Day Camp
This is a 5 day Commuter Camp for only $10 at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC

Science and Technology Camp ( Satellite ) for Sophomores at NC State
This is a 5 day residential camp for only $25 for select students. Must have a recommendation from a Sceince teacher.

Faces of Change Student Leadership Camp at NC State University
This is a one day camp for students who are recommended by Student Support Team - only $25 for boys on Nov 2 and girls on Nov 9

Appalachian State University Forensic Science Camp
This is a 3 day residential camp.

Appalachian State Math Camp
This is a 5 day commuter camp.

UNC Chapel Hill Catalyst Conference
This is a weekend residential conference for selected students who are interested in community issues. The cost after you are accepted is $30. 2011 Conference will be in Feb. Deadline is Monday, Nov 8th.

Minority College Expo
This is a one day event at Union Missionary Baptist Church for all minority students to learn about Financial Aid, Tips for Success/Scholarships, and College Fair plus entertainment/door prizes

Eco-Adventures/Dig History Camps in Thomson, GA
These are week- long day camps ( 9am-4pm) fior students interested in history and archeology. Age limit of 15 years old and costs $65. Carpool and share a hotel to cut down on the expenses.
Center for Disease Control Camp in Atlanta, GA
This is a free 5-day commuter camp for selected 11th thru Super 12th graders who are at least 16 years old. Must provide own transportation and lodging in or outside of Atlanta. Carpool and share lodging costs.

Bennett College for Women Summer High School Girls Entrepreneurship Institute
This is a one week residential program for rising Juniors, Seniors, Super Senior Females who are interested in a Business Major/Careers and Leadership. The cost is just $100 and scholarships are available. Deadline is May 15th. June 20th-27th.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science
This is a free 6-week residential program for select students interested in engineering/science college majors/careers.

General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Challenge Institute in North Carolina
This is a week- long residential camp open to select students grades 9-12 who have a minimum GPA of 2.8/4.0. 2010 location was at Fayetteville State University. Details for summer 2011 coming up soon. Apply for a scholarship if needed.

Moorehouse College Coca Cola Pre-College Leadership Program for African American Males
This is a one week residential camp for African American Males Sophomores and Juniors at Moorehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Scholarships available.

Technological Advances in Reproductive Biology ( TARB ) Science Enrichment Program
This is a free 12-day residential camp at Wingate University for select Juniors and Seniors interested in Animal Science or Human Medicine.
 
Wildlife Rehabilitators of North Carolina Symposium
This is a weekend commuter camp that cost $75 at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Lodging is only $75 a night with a free hot breakfast buffet at the Holiday Inn Brownstone. Application Deadline is Jan 15th to get this rate. $ 85 after.

UNCW Wilmington Women to Win Student Leadership Training Program
This is a free day event for Juniors and Seniors who are interested in someday running for student government and/or a future political office. The program will teach you how to develop and communicate an effective message, reach out to your voters, and how to win a campaign.

UNCW Pre-Law Society
This is a free great professional development activity for students interested in pre- law/law as a major and career. The club meets the third Monday of each month from 7-8 pm at the Randall Library Auditorium. Free Pizza. You must not miss more than 1 monthly meeting in order to earn pda/camp credit

Cape Fear Community College Mardi Gras Business Expo/Fashion Show
This is a free program to all students to learn more about how to dress for a job interview with workshops on completing a job application, resume, and the interview process. Feb 23rd, 2010 at the Schwarz Center - Downtown CFCC Campus

Society of American Military Engineers/Army Engineering and Construction Camp at Vicksburg
This is a residential camp for current 10-12th grade students interested in construction and engineering.

Discover Law Day at Wake Forest School of Law
This is a free one day opportunity for high school Juniors and Seniors who are racially and ethnically diverse to discover career opportunities in law. Usually the 3rd week in February. Must provide your own transportation. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

West Point's United States Military Academy Summer Leaders Seminar
This is a selective program for Juniors and Seniors who are interested in participating in a concentrated week of academic, athletic, military, and social experiences at West Point. This is a full residential camp for $350. Deadline is April 1st.

UNCW Cameron School of Business Enov8t Business Camp ( New )
This is a week-long day camp which includes supplies, lunch, ropes course, and program certificate. The cost is $250 with scholarships available to those in need.

Campbell University Lundy-Fetterman School of Business Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise Program
This is a 5-day residential camp for students interested in business. the cost is $199 with many scholarships available.

Legal Eagle Law Camp at North Carolina Central University School of Law
This is a 5-day Day Camp for all rising 9th and 10th grade students who are interested in Law/Civics. A perfect camp for students involved in Teen Court. The cost is $110 and you can arrange a carpool/shared housing at a hotel with a adult chaperone or residing with family members in the Raleigh/Durham area.

Camp Carolina Scholars Program at UNC Chapel Hill
This is a "Free" residential camp for rising 9th-11th grade students who have at least a "B" Average in both PECHS/CFCC classes and have earned Service Learning hours. There will be workshops on Study Skills, Scholarships/Financial Aid and a model UNC class taught by a UNC Professor.

Faces of Change Student Leadership Conference at UNCW-Feb 21st
This is a one day conference with small and large group interactive workshops and activities for all high school students to think about their future and plan how to reach their destination. The cost is $25 and the deadline is Jan 24th, 2011.

Broyhill Leadership Conference at Queens University in Charlotte
This is a 5 day 4 night residential leadership camp with 11 meals for 9th thru 13th grade students that costs only $200. Application Deadline is June 1st each year
